My Students
Our school is a uniformed preparatory school consisting of a middle school (grades 6-8) and a high school (grades 9-12) for gifted and talented children located in Rockaway Park. Our students go to a school that is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Queens. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch. In the middle school, students are given the opportunity to choose from the following electives: piano, music technology, computer programming, guitar, drawing, publishing, dance, sports, fitness, drama, multicultural dance, video streaming, children’s literature, Robotics, art and coding.
Our school is home to a variety of accelerated classes and AP courses.
Due to previous donations, we are fortunate enough to have one-to-one technology access, which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Additionally, there are a variety of teams and clubs that fit the needs of everyone and benefits the community in which we live.
My Project
One area that my students struggle with is literacy. Often times we as teachers are expected to cover specific literature and this may not spark the interest of all students. However, that does not mean that they do not have the potential to grow in this area. Each day in our class, we allow our students to explore through reading so that they can have a little escape each day.We hope that by doing this, they will not only become better readers, but understand the world around them, become more informed, and continue this habit at home. These books will help our classroom library to grow as well as our students’ engagement in reading!
Every student needs challenging books to read, and it was our pleasure to help donate to Ms. Montalvo’s class.
