Two New Proposed California Laws Spell Woes for California Business Owners

businesscorpAs things stand right now in California it is fairly difficult for a business owner (especially a small business owner) to be successful.  High cost of rent and utilities coupled with seemingly ever increasing taxes have been a serious roadblock for small businesses, but if two newly proposed bills headed through legislation right now get passed things could become even more difficult for California entrepreneurs.

The two newly proposed bills, AB 2416 and AB 1897, would create additional employment obligations for employers.

If passed, AB 2416 would allow an employee to levy a lien on an employer’s property where the employee performed work.  The verbiage of the bill states that the lien can be filed even if there is no proof of the wage that was to be paid.

AB 1897 involves third party workers – if passed this bill would make business owners accountable for unpaid wages and other extraneous expenses for third party workers and sub-contractors who performed work on their property.

Even if these two newly proposed bills don’t make it through legislation, California employment laws are often complex and difficult to navigate. An experienced California business attorney has the knowledge and understanding to assist.
